A 42-foot community dome in Waterville
The Alfond Youth Center designed its 42-foot Mary Nash Beaupre Greenhouse for wheelchair access and hands-on growing, with systems for aquaponics and hydroponics. Jay Middle School's Growing Dome began as a geometry project built from toothpicks and gummy bears by two eighth graders. After their idea earned a $4,000 service-learning grant, about 100 volunteers assembled the full greenhouse in a single Saturday. The school planned to grow vegetables for its cafeteria.
