A Growing Dome size for the way you want to use it

Dome size shapes how much room there is for beds, paths, a work surface or chair, and how the greenhouse feels when more than one person is inside. It also influences the foundation, installation scope, enclosed air volume, and any heating or cooling equipment.

Some people want a compact greenhouse devoted almost entirely to food. Others picture room for propagation, generous paths, or a pond-side place to sit with a cup of coffee. You do not need to solve the circular floor plan before choosing a size.

The six models give households, schools, and community programs room to balance growing area with comfortable circulation. Preset layouts and custom interior design options can help turn the available space into a workable garden.

What four-season growing can look like

“Year-round” can mean harvesting spinach in January, keeping a citrus tree alive, or producing tomatoes through the shortest days. These are all four-season goals, but they do not call for the same indoor conditions.

Cold-tolerant crops can make productive use of winter light without holding the dome at warm-season temperatures. Growth naturally slows during the darkest weeks, so winter harvests follow a different rhythm from summer production.

Tender plants need more protection. Keeping citrus alive, maintaining dormancy, and harvesting fruiting crops through winter are separate goals, each with its own needs for heat, light, monitoring, and backup power.

A school or community greenhouse introduces another rhythm. The dome may need to support classes, volunteers, or food production across a calendar that includes weekends, holidays, and periods when fewer people are present.

Are Growing Domes 4-Season or Year-Round Greenhouse Kits?

Growing Dome greenhouse kits are designed for use across all four seasons, but “four-season” does not describe one fixed indoor climate. For one grower, it may mean a protected winter harvest; for another, warmer conditions for citrus or fruiting crops. The structure, passive systems, crop choices, and any active equipment need to work together for that particular goal.

What matters beyond the hardiness zone

Two properties in the same hardiness zone can behave very differently in winter. A sunny, sheltered location gives a greenhouse a better starting point than one exposed to wind or shaded by trees, buildings, or terrain.

Winter sunlight and day length, typical low temperatures, elevation, wind and snow, and the conditions your plants need are more informative than the zone alone. Frost protection and winter tomato production call for very different indoor conditions.

Drainage, grade, utilities, fuel options, and delivery access also shape what is practical. You do not need to resolve all of these before speaking with us. What you already know is enough to begin comparing size, structure, and climate options.

Four seasons at our Pagosa Springs domes

At our Pagosa Springs demonstration campus, four-season growing does not mean recreating summer all year. We grow season-appropriate crops year-round with minimal supplemental heat and no supplemental lighting. Once nightly freezes begin, we disable the automatic fans and vents until daytime temperatures start rising again.

A geodesic frame distributes loads through interconnected triangles. Its rounded exterior presents less of a broad face to wind, and snow can shed from the sloping panels. 16 mm five-wall polycarbonate encloses the garden and diffuses incoming sunlight.

The reflective north-wall insulation redirects radiant energy toward the growing area. During sunny periods, the above-ground pond absorbs warmth and releases some of it as the dome cools, helping moderate temperature swings.

Heat-activated vent openers support passive air exchange as the greenhouse warms. The standard undersoil system moves air from the pond area through owner-supplied 4-inch corrugated pipe beneath the perimeter bed.

Three versions of a four-season Growing Dome

One greenhouse holds tropical fruit through a Colorado winter. Another rises above a Michigan root cellar, with a wood stove below. In Nebraska, a family chose the 22-foot size after walking through all six demonstration domes and imagining the beds they wanted at home.

Heat, light, and cooling in a year-round greenhouse

A hardy winter garden and a greenhouse full of fruiting tomatoes place very different demands on the climate system. Supplemental heat becomes more likely as the desired indoor temperature rises above what winter sun, thermal mass, and insulation can support.

Heat and light serve separate purposes. Heating depends on outdoor conditions, dome size, crop sensitivity, available fuel or power, and the consequences of an outage. Grow lights become relevant when short days, cloud cover, crop type, or continued winter production leave natural light short of the goal.

During hot weeks, shade cloth and passive ventilation may be enough in some climates; other locations benefit from powered air movement or cooling. Temperature and humidity readings make seasonal adjustments less guesswork.

Fuel or electricity, routine checks, maintenance, seasonal adjustments, and backup systems all contribute to the operating cost.

A foundation suited to the property and winter conditions

The frame, anchors, and foundation work as one structural assembly, and the right foundation depends on the property and project. Slope, soil, frost depth, drainage, intended use, and local wind and snow requirements can all affect the choice.

Trees or terrain may cast long December shadows, while delivery and construction need a workable route to the build area. Water and power are easiest to consider while the foundation and interior are still taking shape.

A local authority or project engineer may require a particular foundation or supporting documentation. Growing Spaces offers several installation paths, including owner-built and locally contracted projects, assisted installation, and eligible builds completed by a Growing Spaces crew.
