Elevation can change Colorado's growing season within a short drive. At Leadville-Lake County Airport, NOAA normals put the average January low near 5°F and the average July high near 71°F. A Front Range greenhouse starts from a different winter and summer baseline.

Winter greens and tropical plants create different indoor temperature and light needs, while a sunny mountain property may collect useful winter warmth and still demand attention to intense summer sun. Commercial growing at 10,000 feet
Cloud City Farm grows at about 10,200 feet in Leadville, where the average season includes only 28 frost-free days. A 42-foot Growing Dome joined its production system in 2018. The farm later expanded into year-round production using three high tunnels, frost cloth, and other systems. The project began as a school composting program on land reclaimed from a former Superfund site.

A student team at Colorado School of Mines raised more than $7,000 to create a campus food project with rentable garden plots and a 22-foot Growing Dome named Mines' Tiny Greenhouse.

At Hillside Gardens in Colorado Springs, a 33-foot Growing Dome serves as both an indoor plant market and Cactus Jack's greenhouse tequila bar, hosting weddings, private events, and a summer concert series.

Growing Dome sizes seen across Colorado projects
The 26-foot accounts for nearly one-third of Colorado's 1,100-plus Growing Domes, but all six sizes are in use across the state.
